Most online course creators struggle to get honest feedback from their students. When one of my clients came to me with a 25% response rate on their end-of-course survey, they were frustrated and flying blind.
They weren’t sure why students dropped off, what lessons needed improvement, or even whether their content was resonating. That’s when we redesigned the feedback experience.
Step 1: Cut the Fluff
The original survey had 15+ questions. Most were too vague or too similar. We cut it down to 6 essential questions and prioritized clarity. Each one had a purpose.
We used principles from UX research and behavioral science to avoid fatigue and reduce bias. Every question was direct, neutral, and easy to answer.
Step 2: Make It Feel Personal
We added a short intro explaining why the feedback mattered, signed by the course creator. Students need to know their voice will be heard. We also allowed one open-text question at the end for honest, uncensored feedback.
Step 3: Respect Their Time
The entire survey could be completed in under 60 seconds. We made that clear from the beginning.
Result? The response rate jumped to 74%.
But Here’s What Really Mattered
The insights were gold.
Students highlighted three specific lessons that were too fast-paced. They shared that the downloadable resources felt buried. And surprisingly, most loved the course but felt disconnected by the end.
These aren’t things you find in star ratings.
What You Can Learn from This:
If you’re a course creator, or online instructor here’s what I’d recommend:
Keep your survey short and purposeful
Ask a few targeted questions about clarity, engagement, and pacing
Leave space for students to write in their own words
Make it clear their input will improve the course for others
